Conceived by architect Catharine Fergus Garber and her team at Fergus Garber Architects, including architect Sneha Avargerimath, the taupe stucco-clad structure is crowned by a gray standing seam metal roof and features multiple zones for entertaining, both in the expansive, lofty great room and outside around the pool.

Standing inside Austin Carrier and Alex Mutter-Rot Standing inside Austin Carrier and Alex Mutter-Rottmayer’s warm, inviting 1,200-square-foot Sonoma home, it’s hard to imagine its former life as a derelict, 1970s-era car barn with two dingy upstairs apartments. The couple completely gutted and re-envisioned the structure, combining the two upstairs apartments and transforming the lower level into an office and showroom for their businesses, Hommeboys Interiors, HOH Builders and furniture brand Haus of Hommeboys.

When the Conners first stepped into this 1925 Span When the Conners first stepped into this 1925 Spanish revival home in San Francisco’s Sea Cliff neighborhood, they were hit with an strong sense of familiarity. 72 hours later, they made an offer.

While the outside of the home held undeniable charm with a red tile roof, arched windows and a loft location overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, the inside told a less romantic story.

That didn’t stop the Connors from falling in love.

After more than 60 years with the same family, the house was in serious need of care—and the Conners were ready to give it new life.

Tucked into the hills of Marin County, a striking Tucked into the hills of Marin County, a striking new residence deftly settles into its surroundings. San Francisco-based architect Andrew Mann designed the 7,000-square-foot, four-bedroom home for a local couple seeking a retreat that felt gracious, welcoming and deeply connected to its woodland setting.

The hilltop property came with steep topography, sweeping valley views — and a rambling old vacation home, built in First Bay Tradition style in the 1890s for a San Francisco family. Even though the home didn’t meet the standards for historic preservation, Mann saved the oldest part of the house, with its steep rooflines and signature gables, while completely rebuilding the inside and expanding the footprint.

“We essentially picked up the existing house, turned it and moved it to the edge of the ridge to optimize the quintessential California views and allow for additional outdoor space with a pool and pool house,” Mann says. “We kept the form and the character of the original structure, but we rebuilt it entirely to create something luxurious and elegant.”

The resulting home feels at once grounded and light-filled, blending traditional wood gables and cedar siding with sleek metal finishes and rectangular shapes for a contemporary feel.

James Yeun Leong Parry’s new restaurant in San Fra James Yeun Leong Parry’s new restaurant in San Francisco, the Happy Crane, celebrates the acclaimed chef’s Chinese heritage and English background with a menu rooted in tradition yet expressed through a modern lens. Dim sum and small plates are peppered with creative flavors like smoked figs, coppa and artichokes, while fresh seafood stars in “XO little fry king,” Parry’s take on a street-food mainstay typically prepared with dried seafood.

The restaurant’s design also deftly marries old and new — an aesthetic crafted by Maria Wu of Studio Wu and architect Hallie Chen of CAHA Design. Highlights include a large, custom artwork by local artist Jesselle Sue that serves as a backdrop to a sleek seafoam banquette; a large-scale floral lantern that nods to classic paper lanterns in the private dining area, where pivoting white oak slats offer flexible privacy; and dark floral wallpaper that’s reminiscent of vintage cheongsam dresses adds a playful-yet-refined touch in the bathroom.
