Tour a Spanish Revival Home That’s a Jaw-Droppin Tour a Spanish Revival Home That’s a Jaw-Dropping Blend of Old and New

“Nothing was off limits,” David and Julie Supan told interior designer @martinyoungdesign about updating their century-old Spanish Revival home in San Francisco’s upscale Ingleside Terraces community. The couple shared with Young their passions for rich color, bold geometry and a flair for the eclectic. They honored many of the architectural details of the home, like in this vanity in the primary bedroom’s dressing area, where they painted the original built-in cabinetry a glossy version of the bedroom ceiling color and fitted with a new marble vanity top.

For this new construction home @tineketriggs used strategic lighting fixtures to highlight the client’s blue-chip art collection. The bronze and satin brass sconces she designed for the entryway evoke the light emanating from the rough texture of a cave. “This space didn’t need a lot of light, because there’s a chandelier hanging above,” she says. “We added these sconces to bring in some drama.” Triggs also designed this narrow console to fit the space, with sculptural brass details at the footing.

To draw the eye up, designer @JeffSchlarb chose a handpainted wallcovering by @porterteleo. Another handpainted wallpaper, by @surfacesbydavidbonk, surrounds the fireplace. Balancing the strong color on the ceiling are neutral tones for the walls, the rug and the sofa.

For this project, designer @hollysnowhollenbeck (@ For this project, designer @hollysnowhollenbeck (@hshinteriors) had a couple—a tech executive and a ceramicist—as her clients. The custom wall hanging in the family room marries their two interests; it’s by artist @windychien, who once worked at Apple. During a sabbatical, she taught herself to tie a new knot every day for a year, and that experience launched her into a career as an artist. “We met Windy in her studio and learned all about her process,” Hollenbeck says. “My client got to pick the rope and the knot style for the custom installation.” Find the full tour of this home, and our story on California fiber artists, at the link in our bio.

For his own home in Chicago’s Andersonville neig For his own home in Chicago’s Andersonville neighborhood, architect Jean Dufresne designed a bold exterior of salvaged cypress and recycled red aluminum. “Some people love it, and others have said it stands out like a sore thumb,” he says with a laugh. He doesn’t care too much what other people think—he adores his house, the interior of which includes many midcentury modern references. Full tour at the link in our bio.

For an early 1900s-era red-brick home by the famed For an early 1900s-era red-brick home by the famed architect Howard Van Doren Shaw, the owners wanted an interior that blended modern and historic styles. They brought in architecture firm @morgantewilson for a down-to-the-studs renovation and a rear addition, and @elizabeth.kueger.design for the interiors. The wet bar was designed to be a little jewel box, reminiscent of a speakeasy. The pendant, from @arteriorshome, reflects beautifully off the glass-tile backsplash. The faucet is from @wtrwrks.
