When Londoners Peri and Michael moved to San Franc When Londoners Peri and Michael moved to San Francisco in 2014, they brought with them a deep appreciation for historical architecture. Having lived in a Regency-Victorian apartment in London, they knew they wanted to find a traditional townhome with the bedrooms upstairs, a formal dining room and unmistakable period character.

Eventually in 2019, they found a three-bedroom Edwardian townhouse built in 1900. Located in Pacific Heights, it had great bones, tons of charm and a generous backyard. As is often the case with older homes, the 2,700-square-foot house was laid out in ways that didn’t quite work for modern family life.

Maja Kristin spent nearly a decade searching for h Maja Kristin spent nearly a decade searching for her “last” home to downsize from a 7,200-square-foot Mediterranean estate in Marin County when she discovered a midcentury “treehouse” with sweeping views of the bay and Mount Tamalpais. Her decision to make an offer wasn’t driven so much by the architecture as it was by the experience of walking into the home.

“It felt like air,” Kristin says. “My previous home was very earthy — grounded and heavy. This one felt light and easy.” With expansive sightlines, abundant glass, and blurred boundaries between indoors and out, the hillside three-bedroom, three-story home offered the perfect blank slate for a new chapter in the life of the retired lawyer and philanthropist.

When the location is perfect, it's easy to see the When the location is perfect, it's easy to see the potential.

That's exactly what drew these homeowners to a dated 1954 Kentfield residence. While the single-story home needed significant updates, its setting—and sweeping Mt. Tam views—made it an opportunity worth pursuing.

Working with their design team, they added a second story, expanded the living space and transformed the house into a modern home designed to make the most of its surroundings.

Newly opened in Palo Alto, Bar Underdog was founde Newly opened in Palo Alto, Bar Underdog was founded by Master Sommelier Dennis Kelly and chef Anthony Secviar, who met at The French Laundry and later opened the Michelin-starred Protégé across the street. Despite their prestigious reputations, however, Kelly and Secviar intended Bar Underdog to be the kind of convivial neighborhood spot where locals feel comfortable dropping in anytime for a craft cocktail like the No. 34, made with gin, lacto-fermented strawberry, genmaicha and yuzu, and a modestly priced bar snack, like the Korean corn-cheese puffs with smoked mozzarella and pickled jalapeño or the tuna tartare with plum miso, avocado and sweet onion “chips.”

The inviting space was designed by Studio KDA featuring a material palette that merges Japanese influence and Bay Area warmth, framed portraits of iconic pop-culture “underdogs,” and a hand-painted entry mural. Fitting the casual vibe, there are no reservations taken, and a late-night “moonlight menu” is designed to welcome the area’s hospitality workers.
