Chelsea learned the luxury real estate business early, watching her mother, Karen Z. Hardesty, become a top-producing agent in both Newport Beach and Marin County. When her family moved to Tiburon in 1981, Chelsea traded the warm waters of Southern California for the cool breezes and more challenging conditions of San Francisco Bay. She later became a sailing instructor at the San Francisco Yacht Club and, in 1992, a national champion.
After graduating from UC Davis, Chelsea began her career in equity research at Montgomery Securities in San Francisco before moving into institutional equity sales with Banc of America Securities, where she covered clients throughout Italy and Switzerland. At 28, she was transferred to London, eventually becoming a Managing Director and Head of U.S. Equities.
In 2003, Chelsea brought that same analytical rigor and global perspective home to Marin real estate. Over the years, her career has spanned luxury residential sales, brokerage leadership, and real estate technology, giving her a broad perspective on both the real estate business and the evolving needs of buyers and sellers.
Today, Chelsea is the principal and founder of RARE Properties Northern California at Compass, which is part of a RARE network with teams in Los Angeles, the California desert, and the Hamptons.
Giving back has always been an important part of Chelsea’s work. Each year, she contributes a portion of her sales to organizations including Play Marin, Home for a Home, Milo Foundation and Project Glimmer, where she also serves as a board member.
With a discerning eye for design and a deep understanding of the standards her clients bring to their homes, Chelsea often serves as a bridge between homeowners, builders, architects, landscape designers and interior designers. That combination of real estate expertise, design sensibility and connection to Marin made her a natural fit for the Spaces Magazine advisory board.
To learn more about her inspirations, we asked a few telling questions.

Italy. Its beauty, warmth and timelessness feed my soul, inspire me and make me feel completely at home.

Which material best matches your personality: wood, glass, stone or steel and why?
Wood. It is warm, grounded, resilient and full of character. It has both strength and softness, and carries its history with it.
What everyday object would you secretly love to redesign and why?
My keychain. I’m always carrying keys for multiple listings and wish it were more organized and stylish.

What is your guiltiest design pleasure (the thing you love that “should” be a faux pas) and why?
Too many throw pillows. I know there’s a point where they stop being functional, but I love the layers, texture and sense of comfort they add to a room.
Growing up, what brand(s) spoke to you visually and why?
Calvin Klein. The clean lines and simple elegance always felt timeless.

Michelangelo. Not only to discuss his extraordinary work, but to hear his firsthand stories of the people, culture and events that shaped the Renaissance.

What’s the first building you remember falling in love with and why?
The home I’ve shared with my husband for the past 16 years. We began with a blank canvas, and it has evolved with us over time. It still brings me happiness every time I walk through the door.
Which design cliché do you secretly adore and why?
Less is more. I’m drawn to spaces that feel calm, intentional and beautifully edited.

What’s the most eccentric item on your desk right now?
A mountain of documents for our family’s Italian dual citizenship…years of history, bureaucracy and determination piled across my desk.
If you could live inside a movie set forever, which would it be?
Under the Tuscan Sun.

Which natural shape or pattern do you find endlessly inspiring and why?
Ocean waves. Their rhythm, movement and ever-changing beauty feel both calming and inspiring.
What would you like your work to whisper about you when no one is looking?
That I led with integrity, cared deeply and always did what was right for my clients.
