The Australian-based industrial designer (he also studied literature and linguistics) intended his creation “to evoke that intoxicating tension between danger and beauty—the same seduction (its namesake) carnivorous plant uses in nature”.  Its visual appeal is matched by its tactility—the angular hardness of the brass cables thread through, vine-like, organic curves of hand-blown glass.

Named after the Michelin Man (the humanoid mascot made from stacked white tires) and created in 1926 – as the International style was beginning – this armchair by the Irish designer cleverly subverts that movement’s adherence to monochromatic color palettes and unornamented rectilinear forms into a shapely, minimalist form.
