James Yeun Leong Parry’s new restaurant in San Fra James Yeun Leong Parry’s new restaurant in San Francisco, the Happy Crane, celebrates the acclaimed chef’s Chinese heritage and English background with a menu rooted in tradition yet expressed through a modern lens. Dim sum and small plates are peppered with creative flavors like smoked figs, coppa and artichokes, while fresh seafood stars in “XO little fry king,” Parry’s take on a street-food mainstay typically prepared with dried seafood.

The restaurant’s design also deftly marries old and new — an aesthetic crafted by Maria Wu of Studio Wu and architect Hallie Chen of CAHA Design. Highlights include a large, custom artwork by local artist Jesselle Sue that serves as a backdrop to a sleek seafoam banquette; a large-scale floral lantern that nods to classic paper lanterns in the private dining area, where pivoting white oak slats offer flexible privacy; and dark floral wallpaper that’s reminiscent of vintage cheongsam dresses adds a playful-yet-refined touch in the bathroom.

Downtown San Jose’s new all-day dining destination Downtown San Jose’s new all-day dining destination, Poppy & Claro, serves up locally driven, seasonal fare alongside coffee, California wines and beers, craft cocktails and nonalcoholic refreshers. The counter service restaurant and bar is the first dining concept from Silicon Valley real estate firm Jay Paul Company, known for creating innovative workspaces.

Conceived by architecture and interiors firm Cass Calder Smith, the casually stylish aesthetic features poppy-orange hues, custom oak furniture, local claro walnut millwork and Heath Ceramics tiles. Original artwork throughout includes works by Sharon Paster, Rodrigo Franzao and Jay Kelly, whose California bear mural crafted from vintage magazines commissioned specifically for the space pays homage to the state’s history and spirit.

After 20-plus years of family life in their Novato After 20-plus years of family life in their Novato home, Leigh and Greg Nikolaieff were ready for a refresh. They had purchased the four-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath, 2,100-square-foot home in 1999 before it was even built in a subdivision in Novato, choosing many of the finishes themselves, but the interiors had become dated and worn over the years. “When our kids went to college, we decided we wanted to stay in our home as empty nesters, but we wanted to update it to reflect our life together going forward,” Leigh says.

What started out as a simple refresh of the finishes in the bathrooms, kitchen and flooring, however, soon expanded in scope as the Nikolaieffs identified additional opportunities for improvement. A wall cut the kitchen and dining area off from the living room. Soffits in the kitchen limited the cabinetry space and made the room look smaller. And an oversize fireplace hearth monopolized valuable floor space in the living room.

Palisociety’s expanding bed and breakfast brand, L Palisociety’s expanding bed and breakfast brand, Le Petit Pali, has opened a new location in Napa Valley’s St. Helena. Spread over nearly three acres, the wine country resort encompasses 24 guest rooms, five private guest cottages with fireplaces, a garden bar and a pool deck. The residential-inspired main house includes a sunny breakfast room overlooking the surrounding vineyards, where guests are served a complimentary breakfast with Taittinger champagne.

Like at Paliosociety’s other properties, brand founder Avi Brosh and his design team furnished each space with a bespoke mix of custom, vintage and curated furnishings. Details like decorative Hermès plates, brass lighting, wallpapered ceilings, plaid and striped textiles, and patterned café curtains set against a backdrop of dark green and cream painted walls create a lushly layered aesthetic. Beyond good looks, in-room amenities like warm cookies, Diptyque bath products, hot water bottles and Grind espresso machines provide a touch of luxury.

The historic bell tower of what is now the La Bahi The historic bell tower of what is now the La Bahia Hotel & Spa has stood an iconic symbol on Santa Cruz’s beachfront for nearly a century, dating back to when architect and UC Berkeley professor William C. Hays first conceived the property as an oceanfront apartment and hotel complex. Meticulously restored, the bell tower now blends harmoniously with the new luxury hotel’s Spanish-Mediterranean design by interior design firm ForrestPerkins.

Located mere steps away from the wharf and Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, the hotel encompasses 155 guestrooms and suites featuring unobstructed ocean views, Nespresso Coffee Machines, Frette bathrobes and hand-painted headboards. Also onsite are four different culinary destinations ranging from fine dining to a poolside lounge and a spa with indoor and outdoor treatment rooms, a sauna overlooking Monterey Bay, two steam rooms and a rooftop deck.

The magic of this home is in the details ✨ “How d The magic of this home is in the details ✨

“How do you make a modern addition appear like it’s always been part of a 1910 Victorian? ‘Magic and fairy dust,’ laughs Rebekah Zaveloff, cofounder and creative director of Imparfait Design Studio, who recently put her skills to the test when renovating a Larkspur home set into the foothills of Mount Tamalpais.

In reality, Zaveloff accomplished the feat by applying meticulous attention to the detail, adding authentic architectural features to the new spaces while restoring Victorian-era charm to the original portion of the home. ‘I love making additions and remodels look like they’ve always been there,’ Zaveloff says.”
